Austrian, since 1879 vice consul in Shanghai, spent his one year vacation during 1883-1884 in Korea to assist Paul Georg von Möllendorff in his work to organise the Korean customs service. Haas worked in the customs office in Chemulpo as authorized agent for Korean trade.

März besucht er zu diesem Zweck koreanische Dörfer, die auf russischem Gebiet in der Nähe des Amur liegen. Am 22. Apr. 1885 erreicht er Wonsan und am 24. Pusan.

Russian, Privatdozent in St. Petersburg, unternimmt in den Jahren 1900 und 1901 eine Reise entlang der Ostküste Koreas, an den Küsten Japans und Sachalins zur Erforschung der Fischereiverhältnisse. Auf dieser Expedition kommt er am 29. Mai 1900 nach Wonsan. Von dort aus bereist er das Diamantengebirge und erreicht im Dez. Seoul. Von Chemulpo aus führt die Expedition weiter nach Japan, wo er die Küstenfauna erforscht.
